Decorate with Suitcases and Trunks

How can I use an old Suitcase or Trunk to decorate my Home?

We have been transporting our personal goods in a “carry-bag” since the dawn of time… what would we do without a suitcase or two? Not only do we use them on our travels but we can also use suitcases and trunks to decorate our homes. Brand new or tattered and torn, suitcases not only look sensational, but can also be used as storage and as quirky looking furniture…

Lugging Luggage

I finally sat down today and sorted through photos that we had taken on our travels to Europe last year… hundreds of them! I found myself giggling every so often when I saw the suitcases that we lugged around England and France… how many times did I tell myself before we left that we don’t need to take so many clothes and shoes… but we did! Two huge suitcases, a backpack, a carry-bag, a handbag and a small ‘roll-into-a-ball-bag”… how did we do it? Half… no three quarters of the clothes we didn’t even wear… and we ended up only wearing the most comfortable of our shoes… we have learnt a lesson that I hope we will remember next time we travel…

This made me think of the many ways that you can use Suitcases and Trunks to decorate your home… especially the old leather ones that have so much character. I still have my old school case that I treasure (must be over 45 years old… a vintage piece… where has the time gone?) it’s a bit battered and bruised but I love the memories that it congers in me every time I see it. I remember how heavy it was filled up with school books and my lunch box and how my arm used to ache carting it around. I now use it to store and display lots of decorating items… changing the display regularly. It will always be used for what it was made for… storage… but being a vintage item… it also looks pretty smart as a vintage decorating item.

I was surprised when I searched the web to share ideas with you, that suitcases are used in many different ways to decorate. If you don’t have any older suitcases or trunks, they can be found, once again, in second-hand outlets and car boots sales… Ask an older relative or friend if they would like to clear out their old luggage…  Nothing wrong with using newer suitcases though, especially if you paint them as shown in the second photo. So go ahead and have fun decorating with suitcases and trunks in YOUR home.

A stack of different suitcases makes a quirky looking bedside table. Items that you don’t use very often can also be stored in the suitcases…

A painted suitcase used as a bedroom side table. White looks stylish and smart, but use what ever colour you want to enhance your bedroom decor…Gloss gives a modern look, semi-gloss gives an older vintage look. Flat looks fantastic, but it’s harder to keep clean…

Lost Lid? doesn’t matter… this suitcase still looks great used for storage of smaller items… would look wonderful on a desk in your office, or at the front door on a table to house keys and maybe a small pop-up umbrella…

A pyramid of suitcases makes a statement at the front door… or is this home owner going on a holiday?…

Repurposing suitcases… just add legs… instant table…

DIY drawers using shelving and suitcases (no lids required)… looks amazing… add some felt underneath the suitcase for ease of sliding… add decorative luggage labels to let you know what is in the suitcase…

Smaller items can be stored away but still be at hand to use. Suitcases are used under a bench for this purpose…

How creative… don’t forget the comfort of our smaller family members… never would have thought to use a suitcase as bedding for pets…

A glossy black suitcase reborn into an elegant hall table…

Not only a fashion statement in their heyday, these suitcases are still exuding ‘chic-ness’ today…

Think twice before throwing out your old luggage… there are so many ways to decorate with suitcases and trunks… and so many storage options that you can use them for too…

Until we meet again…
